Global Showbiz Watch 20 – The Overseas Oscar Shortlist Shakeout Podcast

Global Showbiz Watch 20 â€" The Overseas Oscar Shortlist Shakeout Podcast

Global Showbiz Watch podcast 20Deadline International Editor Nancy Tartaglione and host David Bloom talk in their latest podcast about which films survived the record-setting competition for Oscar’s best foreign-language feature to make the shortlist, as well as surprise exclusions such as The Past and Wadjda.

They also look at the week’s international box office, led by a still-scorching The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug but also by a surprisingly strong showing from the second Anchorman movie, even as Bollywood product Dhoom 3 sets yet more global records for an Indian-made film; a Chinese court’s troubling verdict for a troubling case of copycat violence based on a children’s cartoon; and J.K. Rowling’s next Harry Potter project, headed to the London stage.

Appreciation: Julian Myers The Ultimate ‘Press Agent’

Appreciation: Julian Myers The Ultimate ‘Press Agent’

Old school.

That is how I would describe the consummate PR pro, Julian Myers , who passed away Saturday morning  at the age of 10892318064_f192c18c16_o 95. I tweeted out news of his death Saturday afternoon saying he would be missed.  It’s the end of an era to be sure. As long as I have been in , and around , this business Myers has been there – a friendly , encouraging face at just about every major showbiz event. He lived for this stuff and could always be counted on to send along a letter highlighting an article in which I might have been mentioned, or offering an outreached hand whenever I would see him. This man was the dean of Hollywood publicists who still toil in their profession. Hell, he wasn’t a publicist, he was a press agent. Even in his 90′s I can think of few others who had a more unabashed and total enthusiasm for the business as it once was and  still evolved with it effortlessly.

He started off as nearly  a charter member of USC’s  Film School in 1937 and then worked in Columbia’s story department , but it was landing his job  in the Fox publicity department in 1949 that really got things cooking for him. That was about the same time as Fox’s most famous star, Marilyn Monroe also started. Julian would often tell me about those days when he would have to go try to get the famously difficult actress out of bed and on to the set. He wasn’t her publicist as some outlets wrongly said in their headlines today, he was a loyal studio publicist – or more accurately press agent – who had 20th’s back in those days. One of his earliest encounters with her was in 1950 when she had a small role in the iconic Fox Oscar winner, All About Eve. In pure “press agent”fashion he even got  the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to block  out all the letters in its neon sign except “EVE” whe n the film had its premiere across the street at Grauman’s Chinese.  I love these stories.  Again, old school. That’s who Julian was  right up through the internet era of emails, Facebook and twitter. In fact I never received a single email from Julian. It was always the old fashioned way. But somehow the message got across. That is something he knew how to do as well as anyone. Appropiately over the years he won the highest honors of his profession from the Publicists Guild Of America.

He left Fox in ’62, started his own company , worked for American International in the ‘Beach Party ‘ heyday, went back to his own business.  He never stopped. He even invented “Amigo Day” , a humanitarian organization that promoted positive vibes among our fellow human beings. Now in the era of ‘Duck Dynasities’, vicious comments, and anonymous sniping on the internet that message is definitely needed.

Patsy-and-Julian-myersAnd right to the end he continued trying to teach the fundamentals of the business he loved.  My wife, Madelyn , often appeared as a guest lecturer at his Loyola Marymount class on Public Relations.  I even spoke there too. It was a privilege.  Julian was part of a dying breed  in this business and I always thought ‘attention must be paid’.  His beloved Patsy died of complications from a stroke suddenly in October while the pair was in Las Vegas for one of the frequent marathons Myers ran in as its most senior entrant .  He almost always finished those races too, the oldest in the pack  and the last one st anding. I don’t think he got over the loss of Patsy . I last saw him at her memorial service last month making sure she got the tribute she deserved. Still the oldest in the race, still standing.

And still , happily, ‘old school’.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Delivers Big Ratings With Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake

‘Saturday Night Live’ Delivers Big Ratings With Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake

Nellie Andreeva

fallon-timberlakeJustin Timberlake has been the biggest Saturday Night Live ratings draw of the last decade. Jimmy Fallon is one of the most popular SNL alums whose frequent collaborations with Timberlake have created a slew of viral hits. It’s no surprise the teaming of the two last night brought SNL ratings gold. The Christmas edition hosted by Fallon and featuring musical guest (and sketch performer) Timberlake averaged a 6.3 household rating in Nielsen’s 56 metered markets and a 3.9/18 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with Local People Meters.

‘SNL’ Leans On Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake For Yuletide Yuks: Video

Those were SNL‘s highest ratings in both categories in nearly two years, since the Jan. 7. 2012 edition hosted by Charles Barkley with musical guest Kelly Clarkson (7.0, 4.1 in 18-49), which was buoyed by a big NFL primetime overrun. Taking football out of the equation, the Fallon-Timberlake show delivered the  top SNL ratings in two and a half years, since  the season finale on May 21, 2011, hosted by Timberlake and featuring musical guest Lady Gaga (7.0, 4.5 in 18-49). It was the top-rated SNL Christmas edition in nine years in the metered-market households, since the Dec. 18, 2004 telecast hosted by Robert De Niro with musical guest Destiny’s Child (6.6/16) and the  highest rated Christmas show among 18-49 in the six-year history of Local People Meters. Fittingly, the two previous highest rated Christmas editions were hosted by Fallon (Dec. 17, 2011, 5.3, 3.0 rating in 18-49) and Timberlake (Dec. 16, 2006, 5.5).

BOX OFFICE: ‘Hobbit,’ ‘Anchorman 2? Lead Way In Crowded Market; ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Saving Mr. Banks,’ ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ In Wide Release

BoxOffice_logo__131122164403-275x206

OPENING:  Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Paramount, wide after Wed. opening) very strong, American Hustle (Sony, wide) a nice set up , Saving Mr. Banks (Disney, wide) respectable, Walking with Dinosaurs (Fox/Reliance/IMG Global, wide) plodding along, The Past (Sony Pictures classics, ltd), Her (Warner Bros.’ ltd), Dhoom3 (Yash Raj Films, ltd) top ten surprise. NOTEWORTHY: Disney’s Thor: The Dark World may hit the $ 200M mark this weekend. Overall, year-to-year up box office up around 20%.

UPDATED, 12:30 AM SATURDAY: Responding to feedback, I’m going to post numbers up top and do analysis at the end. But to preface, remember this weekend is considered the warm-up before next week’s end of the year box office madness. These are early estimates and numbers will change as the weekend progresses. Here we go:

TOP FIVE:

Warner Bros./MGM’s The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, took in roughly $ 8.4M to $ 8.6M Friday night on 3,928 locales and is expected to gross a little over $ 30M for the pre-holiday weekend for a cume between $ 126M and $ 127M. Of course that number could change. The question is how much it will drop overall in its second weekend. Percentage drops could be high. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, in 3,507 theaters, nabbed $ 8.7M to $ 9M in its first night of the three-day weekend and it looks at the moment to make anywhere between $ 27M to $ 29M in its three-day debut and around $ 41M to $ 42M for the five-day for Paramount Pictures. Disney’s Frozen is still holding strong in its fifth week out, sliding in with a $ 5M Friday and is expected to gross anywhere in the range of around $ 20M more this weekend (depending on how high a percentage jump it gets from family weekend) for a total cume of around $ 190M. It’s in third place and in 3,540 theaters.

Sony’s American Hustle, in its first weekend going wide in 2,507 locations, brought in about $ 6M Friday night and is expected to have a three-day weekend around the $ 18M to $ 19M mark. In the fourth spot ahead of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which in its fifth week on 2,949 arenas is expected to end the weekend with anywhere between $ 8.5M to $ 10M; its cume is now around $ 370M. Also in contention for the fifth spot comes Saving Mr. Banks from Disney â€" also going wide this weekend â€" bringing in around $ 3M Friday and is expected to gross about $ 9.5M.

BOTTOM FIVE:

Tyler Perry’s A Madea’s Christmas from Lionsgate, looks like it’s going to drop significantly in its second weekend out. In 2,194 theaters, it looks to bring in around $ 8M to $ 9M this weekend to push its cume to right around $ 27M to $ 29M. The Fox distributed Walking With Dinosaurs is plodding along in 3,231 locales in its first weekend out. The CG animated 3D film pushed in estimated $ 2M to $ 2.3M Friday night and is expected to gross only around $ 7M to $ 9M for the pre-holiday weekend. The Bollywood film Dhoom3  – which is a Hindi action/thriller and third in a franchise snuck into the top ten this weekend (not unusual for a popular Bollywood film). In 236 theaters, it has a per screen of $ 16,525.It could gross about $ 4M this weekend. Rounding out the top ten is Thor: The Dark World w hich could just slip past the $ 200M in its seventh week. It is expected to pull in another $ 1.4M in 1,116 theaters.

NOTEWORTHY:  This weekend overall looks to be about 20% ahead of last year. Good tidings for all.

Last year’s Hobbit dropped 55% its second weekend out. This year’s percentage drop may be greater than that, and that will be telling. Walking with Dinosaurs has a hefty budget of what those involved with the film say is $ 80M. Add to that, marketing and distribution costs and a box office take expected to be only $ 7M to 9M and right now the words ‘tarpits’ and ‘extinction’ come to mind. Will see what happens during the week. Dhoom3 is considered to be one of the most expensive Indian films of all time and is the first Bollywood offering to be filmed for the IMAX format. Both American Hustle and Saving Mr. Banks have a good chance of reaching maybe $ 70M to $ 90M over time.  Looking back historically, P.S. I Love You, which grossed $ 6.8M the weekend before Christmas, ended up grossing a total of $ 60M while Sony’s The Fighter opened at $ 12M and â€" buoyed by Oscar buzz and wins â€" ende d its run at $ 80M.  Remember, when Christmas falls mid-week, the previous weekend’s box office fails to be as significant as what it will do during the extended holiday week. But boy do we have a Christmas crunch on its way with five more wide releases knocking into an already crowded market. Think bumper cars.

NEXT WEEK: Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount, wide), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox, wide), 47 Ronin (Universal, wide), Grudge Match (Warner Bros.’, wide), Justin Bieber’s Believe (Open Road, wide), The Invisible Woman (Sony Pictures Classics, ltd), August Osage County (The Weinstein Co, ltd).

UPDATE, 8 AM FRIDAY: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues took in another $ 5.1M on Thursday for a total 2-day cume of $ 13.2M. Paramount is still expecting a $ 30M three-day weekend, although industry analysts are downgrading that estimate to below $ 30M. Only time will tell as it enters a very packed weekend. It is, however, one of the few comedies in the marketplace now. anchorman-2__131123195832-275x187The promotio n its star Will Ferrell has done in pre-release the picture has been significant, everything from a spot for Dodge to speaking on college campuses. This pre-holiday opening weekend for all new pics is just a warm-up for next week. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is doing well this week with another $ 5M added for a to date cume now of $ 96M. Expectations are for it to be No. 1 this weekend. American Hustle played strong last night in 2,215 theaters for another $ 1.1M and Sony is expecting a mid-to-high teen million dollar gross for the three-day.

PREVIOUS, THURSDAY AM: It’s like rush hour in Los Angeles at the nation’s box office this weekend with four more titles merging into the marketplace in wide release on what is The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug’s second weekend out.  Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, having opened to a $ 2.3 million midnight on Tuesday night for a stellar $ 8M Wednesday total, looks on track for a $ 40M-$ 45M five-day opener and a $ 30M three-day total in 3,4550 theaters. (I will be looking at both the three-day to compare apples and apples and the five-day, of course), according to Paramount.  One distrib noted that the opening was better than the Wednesday opening of Little Fockers three years ago December which clocked in at $ 7.1M that day and went on to grab a three-day total of $ 30.8M. In that instance, Fockers opened on Christma s Eve when many theaters are dark so its not exactly comparing apples with apples. Anchorman 2 also received a B Cinemascore, probably because the first 45 minutes were much stronger than the last 45 minutes, according to exhibs.

Meanwhile, The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug is headed for another strong weekend and is expected to pull in another $ 30M-plus over the three-day. Its cume to date with is now $ 91M as it continues to hold in 3,903 locales. And Thor: A Dark World is just days away from crossing the $ 200M domestically mark for Disney and Marvel with its cume now at 199.1M.

American Hustle, which had phenom per screen averages last weekend (over $ 123,000 per), goes wide for Sony on roughly 2,507 screens.  The David O.Russell film is finding its success across demos playing equally well with adult male and females. Not surprising. This strong ensemble piece of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence is likely to gain strong positive word-of-mouth and have a good weekend. Sony expects a mid-to-high-teen million dollar weekend and a strong multiple … yep, expect long tail on this one.

Walking With DinosaursCompeting for Disney’s Frozen family audiences, comes Fox’s Walking With Dinosaurs stomping in on 3,231 locations, but unlike Frozen, the dinosaur movie is made for 3D eye candy. The majority of theaters for Walking With Dinosaurs are 3D theaters â€" 84% to be exact. With Frozen already having established itself as a solid performer for families and adults, Disney is turning its attention this weekend to Saving Mr. Banks hoping to grab more attention for the film about Walt Disney securing the rights to Mary Poppins from its very proper and unwilling author played by Emma Thompson. Last weekend’s limited release saw smaller than hoped for numbers for the entertaining, story-driven film.

Also opening in limited release is Warner Bros.’ Her starring Joaquin Phoenix, and Sony Pictures Classics’ The Past which was just nominated for a Golden Globe as the Best Foreign Language Film and won Best Actress at Cannes for its star Bérénice Béjo.

UK-Bound 2014 Pilot Season? ABC Comedy ‘Galavant’ To Film There, Will Others Follow?

UK-Bound 2014 Pilot Season? ABC Comedy ‘Galavant’ To Film There, Will Others Follow?

Nellie Andreeva

sasseComedy series have been immune from runaway production, with only dramas making the trek to other countries, mostly Canada. That is about to change. ABC/ABC Studios’ single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken writing the music, will sho ot in the UK, including Wales. This is the first U.S. broadcast pilot to film in the UK since the country in April approved a tax credit that provides a 25% rebate on 80% of the production budget spent in the UK. Fox’s event series 24: Live Another Day was the first major U.S. TV series to set production in the UK after the new incentives were introduced. With the first U.S. pilot season under the new tax program just around the corner, will we see a boom of pilot production in the UK? That would be ironic because the British TV industry largely snubs the U.S. pilot system and goes straight to series with short orders.

The move to the UK is not as easy as relocating to Canada as productions that want to film on the island have to pass a “cultural test” or be an UK co-production. Galavant features a largely British cast, led by star Joshua Sasse and co-star Vinnie Jones, while 24: Live Another Day is set in London. Then there is the production space crunch in London brought on by the tax incentives, which reportedly diverted Showtime/Sky Atlantic’s series Penny Dreadful, set in Victorian London, to Dublin, while  Starz’s series Outlander is filming near Glasgow â€" from a converted warehouse space. To alleviate the situation, Film London recently made 1.25 million square feet of additi onal filming space available, just in time for pilot season.

Now Chuck Norris Spoofs Jean Claude-Van Damme’s Split Stunt: Video

Jean Claude-Van Damme‘s split stunt atop two Volvo trucks certainly has provided plenty of parody fodder. First it was Channing Tatum’s version straddling two food carts on the set of 22 Jump Street. Now Chuck Norris takes it a step further (and upward). The CGI parody shows Norris straddling the wings of two airplanes as he balances 11 paratroopers in the shape of a Christmas tree on his cowboy-hatted head. Hungarian creative agency Delov Digital created the video as a holiday greeting.

Bashir resigned earlier this month after the drum beat failed to die down when he apologized for having suggested,  on air, that someone might defecate in Sarah Palin’s mouth, when she likened the country’s debt to China to slavery, because an infamous slave owner used to punish his slaves in that manner.  “Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation,” Bashir said in an emai. “It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments.”

boxoffice-specialty__111212022432-200x150 (1)Spike Jonze’s New York Film Festival world premiere Her will finally hit theaters this weekend in limited release. Jonze has long had “indie” cred and this film will likely find a core of fans among Specialty audiences though the Warner Bros release will go wide in January. “The movie has all these high-concept ideas, but it is nevertheless mostly a relationship movie. It’s about love and our need to connect and our [method] of connecting. But, at its heart, it is a relationship movie,R 21; Jonze said ahead of its NYFF debut. The Specialty b.o. will likely note the film’s opening this weekend as it sits on the cusp of what defines a “Specialty.” Newcomers that are more squarely in that area also taking their bows this weekend include Oscar-winner Asghar Farhadi’s first non-Iranian-set film The Past, which will platform this weekend before Christmas via Sony Classics. Joe Swanberg‘s All The Light In The Sky (Factory 25) is headed out after an Ultra-VOD run. Swanberg hinted that his film Drinking Buddies (out last summer) had a similar Ultra-VOD run and gave some hint at its non-theatrical exclusive, which suggests the po wer of such releases for at least certain titles. Yash Raj Films will open Dhoom 3, the largest Bollywood title to hit theaters in North America to date, while IFC Films will open Cannes pickup The Selfish Giant at two NYC locations. And First Run will take a different approach to its releases of its doc Maidentrip this weekend.

The Past (Le passé)thepast
Director-writer Asghar Farhadi
Writer: Massoumeh Lahidji (adaptation)
Cast: Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim, Ali Mosaffa, Pauline Burlet, Elyes Aguis, Jeanne Jestin, Sabrina Ouazani, Babak Karimi
Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics

Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi’s The Past is his first film outside his home country and the follow-up to his 2012 Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Language Film, A Separation. Shot over several months in Paris, The Past centers on an Iranian man who deserts his French wife and two children to return to his homeland. While away, his wife embarks on a new relationship, a twist her husband must confront when she asks him for a divorce. “I didn’t have problems finishing the film and worked in a very calm environment,” said Farhadi. “But the big challenge was the French language and culture.” One challenge Farhadi did face was a an actor change in the lead role of Marie. Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard initially had the part, but a scheduling conflict forced her to leave the project. Bérénice Bejo was tapped for the part. “[Bejo and Cotillard] were both on my initial list, but I w as under the impression Bérénice was not available for the time I needed her, but I found out later she was available,” said Farhadi. “[But] Marion was busy with other work and did not have time for rehearsals.” Farhadi reportedly had a great-deal of rehearsal time leading up to the actual shoot.

Asked how his success at the Academy Awards might have affected how he tackled The Past presumably only months afterward, the filmmaker noted that he had been writing well before Oscar came around. “The biggest impact the Oscar had was increasing my audiences in a number of countries, and this is very valuable to me, because it gives me both responsibility and energy,” he added. SPC will platform The Past in L.A. and NYC this weekend and head to San Francisco on the 27th. It will then head to several additional cities January 10 with more added into February following a similar trajectory as A Separation. That film grossed over $ 7 million domestically.

All-the-Light-in-the-Sky_800x1185All The Light In The Sky
Director-writer: Joe Swanberg
Co-writer: Jane Adams
Cast: Jane Adams, Sophia Takal, Kent Osborne, Allison Baar, Simon Barrett, Lindsay Burdge, Larry Fessenden, Lawrence Michael Levine, David Siskind
Distributor: Factory 25

Seemingly tireless filmmaker Joe Swanberg and actress Jane Adams began talking about what would become All The Light In The Sky back when they worked on 2009′s Alexander The Last and into 2011′s Silver Bullets. The film revolves around an actress who lives in Malibu, but faces limited acting opportunities because of her age. Her young, aspiring-actress niece arrives for a weekend just as she is confronting her fears of navigating life in the 21st century. “Casting was a combination of Jane and me pulling together people we’ve worked together,” said Joe Swanberg. “It was originally going to be set in NYC because Jane was living there when we first [conceived of it], so this was quite a different movie than had it been [set] on the Lower East Side.” Production instead went to the tony beach community up P.C.H. and conveniently shot at Adams’ home, presumably cutting down on costs. Still, Swanberg foun d resources the old fashioned way primarily. “Financing like any of my movies went on my credit card,” added Swanberg. “So there’s a typical long road to getting paid back…” Initial shooting began in December 2011, shooting up to just before Swanberg’s next project, Drinking Buddies, which opened this past summer. All The Light In The Sky debuted at AFI Fest in November 2012. Swanberg had already been working with Factory 25′s Matt Grady on an “alternative” four film subscription release plan of past movies. “[Grady is] very artist friendly, so [working with him on this] was a natural fit for the movie,” said Swanberg. “This combination of VOD with a small theatrical release has been working well for me.”

Swanberg commented at a talk last summer ahead of the Drinking Buddies release that the ultra-VOD window had already allowed him to make his money back even ahead of the theatrical roll out. All The Light In The Sky has also been available via Ultra-VOD since December 3. “With Drinking Buddies, our VOD release was ten times what our theatrical release was and I assume it will be similar [for this movie] but to a smaller degree,” added Swanberg. The domestic theatrical cume for Drinking Buddies topped out at over $ 343K. If that is indeed multiplied by ten, then that is a tidy sum, though actual figures are not available. “It’s about the audience and how they’re consuming movies,” added Swanberg. “I go to movies more than most people but iTunes and Netflix have made it so easy…” Factory 25 will open All The Light In The Sky in New York and will add cities throughout January and F ebruary.

Dhoom 3dhoom3
Director-writer: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Co-writer: Prakash Bharadwaj
Cast: Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Kim DeJesus, Tarbrett Bethell, Bipasha Basu, Riya Ray
Distributor: Yash Raj Films

Indian Yash Raj produced the first Dhoom series in 2004, followed by a sequel in 2006. The third, opening this weekend, will be the widest theatrical release of a Bollywood film in North America. The action/thriller follows a circus entertainer who is trained by his father. As an adult, he stars alongside a the gymnast Aaliya at another circus, though his true motive is to rob the show’s owners whom he believes killed his father. Yash Raj has had success with South Asian audiences in North America including recent titles Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Shuddh Desi Romance and expects to draw that crowd mostly, but it hopes it might lure some others as well since it is shot in part in the U.S. “The crossover so to speak is not really happening at the moment and our numbers and success is largely thanks to the Diaspora,” said Yash Raj’s VP – Int’l Operations, Avtar Panesar. “Dhoom is shot in Chi cago and we do hope there will be some intrigue to watch this from the non-Diaspora audiences.” Panesar noted three stages to “crossover” and said Bollywood-centric titles are likely still in what he called the “Intrigue” first stage, but hopes this film might break a barrier. “It could just take one film to break that barrier [and] l hope Dhoom is that film,” he said. “It’s set in a world everyone relates to and yet it adds the Bollywood elements which is a bonus.” For its core audience, star Aamir Khan as the feature’s villain raised awareness after word got out.

Panesar noted: “Our biggest strength has been that our audiences are so clued in that technically we just need to announce a date and they will be there for a film like this.” Not bad! Penesar also pointed out that the trailer alone has over 13.5 million hits leading up to its release. Dhoom 3 will have a comparatively large roll out in 236 theaters in North America. It will also open in over 40 countries simultaneously, adding others the following week. VOD is post theatrical.

selfish giantThe Selfish Giant
Director-writer: Clio Barnard
Cast: Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas, Sean Gilder, Lorraine Ashbourne, Ian Burfield, Steve Evets, Siobhan Finneran
Distributor: IFC Films

Cannes/AFI Fest feature The Selfish Giant is a contemporary fable about two 13 year-old working class Brits who seek fortune by getting involved with a local scrap dealer and criminal, which leads to consequences. IFC Films picked the title up out of Cannes after it received buzz there. “We just fell in love with everything about the film and felt strongly that Clio Barnard was an important director to support in the U.S.,” said IFC Films acquisitions exec Arianna Bocco. “As this is one of the best reviewed and most lauded films of the year, we feel it will connect strongly to upscale art-house audiences where word of mouth will be strong.” The company will open The Selfish Giant day and date/VOD and in New York at IFC Center and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center this weekend. It will head to the Sundance Sunset on December 27 and to top markets throughout January.

Maidentripmaidentrip
Director-writer: Jillian Schlesinger
Writers: Laura Dekker, Penelope Falk
Subject: Laura Dekker
Distributor: First Run Features

14 year-old Dutch teen Laura Dekker made headlines some years back when Holland’s equivalent to child protective services intervened when they tried to stop her from taking a solo sailing voyage around the world alone. As Dekker triumphed in her wish, producer Emily McAllister said she and director Jillian Schlesinger were immediately intrigued. “Jullian read about it and we reached out to Laura about the idea of doing a very collaborative film and we began shooting her before she left,” said McAllister. “In all, she was at sea a year-and-a-half and had limited contact with her, but met up with her at [various] ports.” McAllister said the biggest challenge was guessing when she’d arrive at some far-flung destination. “We had a lot of one-way flights,” she added. After the shoot, Dekker stayed on Schlesinger’s sofa for about a month to help with the film’s completion. “It’s such a personal story we felt it was important to have her involvement,” added McAllister. Maidentrip premiered at SXSW in March and Cinetic’s Linzee Troubh showed it to First Run, which picked it up for release.

Because of the holiday rush, First Run is skirting its typical NYC release, instead taking Maidentrip to the Bloor Cinema in Toronto (home to non-fiction festival Hot Docs), “Normally we try and start in NYC for films that are going to play around the country but we thought that the opportunity would fit for this,” said First Run’s Marc Mauceri. “[Bloor Cinema's] Robin Smith does a terrific job up there and the time period is good for this one. We at First Run try and stay away from the prime holiday period here in NYC because there’s too much high level studio Oscar stuff that sucks up all the oxygen.” Torontonians will be the first to sail around the world, though New Yorkers will be able to see Maidentrip January 17. First Run will continue to roll it out to other cities, emphasizing — no surprise — coastal communities. FilmBuff will handle VOD in March.

paul-rudd1Marvel is notoriously tight-lipped about its movies, so even after we told you yesterday that Paul Rudd has been tapped to play Ant-Man, it took the company until just now to admit the casting is true. Said producer Kevin Feige in a post this evening on Marvel.com: “When [director] Edgar Wright cam e to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the Marvel_logo__130919033411-200x88first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.” The pic is set for a July 31, 2015 release.
